What? To add value to everyone's rowing experience, and give all current and former rowers a connection to developing the sport

Our goal is for everyone in England who has a connection with rowing at any level -  current or former; on water or indoors; volunteer, umpire, coach, spectator, or parent - to feel that being a member of British Rowing enhances their experience in the sport; and to increase the number (and diversify the type) of people who have that connection.

Rowing has to be better for people because we exist - because, as well as making the environment safe, we facilitate things and make it easier to engage.  Wherever people experience the sport - in clubs, at competitions, on the indoor rowing machine in their garage or gym, seeing their child learning it, or even just watching it on TV - we want them to feel that being part of rowing means being part of the British Rowing family. We want to  give them a sense of belonging, and make them a part of the sport's wider success.

How? By making it convenient and easy to engage with us, and being clear about where we can add value

Signing up to British Rowing should be easy, and something that everyone with an association in the sport should want to do. We aim to be clear about where and how we add value, with membership benefits that resonate with the rowing community and that are explained in simple terms, to allow clubs to explain easily to members why they should join.

Once a member, each individual should be able to receive a custom experience by indicating preferences for the content they like to read and the products and activities that are of interest and relevance to them, choosing different individual items and packages based on their needs and level of engagement. In addition to high-quality club support (which would mean clubs and their members want to be affiliated to us), we need to deliver high-quality, efficient tools for clubs and members to manage their rowing lives more easily (whether they are competitors, organisers, spectators, or recreational rowers), as well as give clear guidance and timely support. Membership of British Rowing needs to be about facilitating and enhancing people's enjoyment of the sport while also giving them a sense of belonging, rather than being seen as a tax that allows them to race.

‍Why? Because if our members are our biggest advocates, we can spread the love more easily

Growing our membership will allow us to develop the sport and take it to wider and wider audiences across the country. As membership grows, economies of scale bring down costs for everyone at the same time as providing more that can be invested in the sport. The bigger a community we are, the more effectively we can bring the tremendous benefits that rowing brings to mental and physical health to more and more people. But we cannot do it alone: our clubs and our members have to be our biggest advocates. Ultimately, it's not our sport: it's theirs.
