The detail on each part of this strategy is work in progress, presented to indicate our direction of travel and not as a finished product.

We want your input and feedback to help improve it, both for the next iteration as detailed on our roadmap, and on-going. It will change, and we will listen to the membership and what they want and need.

Send us your feedback, and be part of this step change in British Rowing.

What? Provide tools which facilitate people's involvement

We want to make our members’ rowing lives easier by providing tools which facilitate their involvement and make it easy to find the information they need or might be interested in.

How? Produce v1.0 of a rowing app/digital framework which will allow individuals to take control of their rowing lives

We have been using ClubHub and BROE2 as tools for clubs and event organisers for a few years, but our aim in the coming months is to spec out and then produce a new roadmap for digital and technology development to ensure that what we provide is quick and easy to use, and genuinely facilitates and improves people’s experience in the sport - whether they are just members, or organising or entering competitions. This is likely to include V1.0 of a rowing app which will allow individuals to take control of their rowing lives, in line with the aims outlined in our Membership strategy of providing tools that allow people to enhance and manage their rowing lives more effectively.

We need to give everyone simple easy access to the sport they love at the touch of a button, as well as the ability to communicate and share content with others online too. Our platforms need to be able to surface the content people want, when and where they want it. We will review our data structures to help us better understand what our members want and how we can make things easier.

We will take an agile approach to building out systems and digital tools that will make administration easier and access to the sport faster than ever before. We are looking at creating a new free app with an aim to flesh out our idea and produce a prototype in the immediate months, and a working version early in 2022. We will be clear what we are working on, through our roadmap, and be transparent about what tools we are working on and when we plan to deliver them by.

The series of free tools we are looking at offering, rolled out not in one go but within several versions (in line with tech offerings that we are all used to today), includes:

  • Account management, linked to ClubHub via our API
  • Membership management (see Membership strategy for further details)
  • Centralisation of social media feeds and BR+ content
  • Calendar
  • Push notifications of rowing content, news and events (including cancellations of Heads or Regattas), in order to deliver up-to-the minute information without people having to spot it on our social media feeds
  • Integration with BROE2, to allow people to enter and manage competitions more easily
  • Regatta/Event management tools (such as, for example, the functionality for volunteers to make themselves available and event organisers to notify volunteers of their selection, using geolocation technology widely available to allow people to focus in on opportunities in their region)
  • BR shop
  • Booking into workout sessions with our ergo partners
  • Plug-in of other rowing services through British Rowing’s API, to allow seamless integration of your BR account with rowing functionality provided by others
  • Integration with other providers of potential interest - for example, Bimble for rowing-focused haunts
  • Ergo finder to create a peer-to-peer sharing community and give more people access to machines
  • Other things that members might suggest

Our framework and roadmap will be firmed up and published in December.

Why? Because facilitation breaks down barriers

Facilitation includes providing tools that make everyone's life easier, which enhances the experience of those already taking part. It also means fewer barriers to enjoying the sport. The easier it is to enjoy, the larger the number of people who will want to take part.
