Welfare and Governance

The detail on each part of this strategy is work in progress, presented to indicate our direction of travel and not as a finished product.

We want your input and feedback to help improve it, both for the next iteration as detailed on our roadmap, and on-going. It will change, and we will listen to the membership and what they want and need.

Send us your feedback, and be part of this step change in British Rowing.

What? Keep the sport clean and safe for everyone

We aim for rowing to be a leading sport founded on the principles of safety, fairness, integrity, welfare and good governance. A safe and clean sport is a sport that everyone can enjoy in the knowledge they are protected, and has people’s wellbeing at the centre of all activity.

How? By providing clear guidance on requirements

We provide expert guidance and support to clubs and competitions, and any individual who takes part in rowing.

The Welfare and Governance team embeds an environment where children, young people and adults with care and support needs are safe and can thrive.  We protect the rights of rowers to a clean and fair sport by ensuring that health and safety is paramount in all aspects of the rowing experience. We provide the tools for clubs and competitions to administer themselves with the highest levels of integrity in accordance with good governance. And we advocate the welfare and development of employees, and all who deliver a service within British Rowing.

We will continue to ensure our policies are simple, clear and easily understood by everyone, and that world-class systems are in place to facilitate the raising of concerns and ensure the wellbeing of everyone involved in the sport - at a national as well as local level.

Why? Because good governance matters

The safety of our members is central to everything we do. People stay in clubs that are properly managed and where all members are treated properly, and leave clubs where the opposite is the case. We help ensure that a club’s governance, including its constitution and membership structure, is appropriate, and that all of the systems needed to protect them are in place.
